Modeling Water Quality using Modular Compositional LearningProcess-based models based on ecological knowledge have powerful predictive abilities when it comes to lake dynamics. But, by integrating machine learning into our modeling framework, we can gain a greater understanding of the processes that control water quality to a fine spatial and temporal scale.

Modeling Diel Vertical Migration Behavior of ZooplanktonDiel vertical migration (DVM) is a behavior exhibited by zooplankton wherein they will come towards the surface of the water at night and retreat to the depths during the day. The intensity of this migration changes based on many factors including light intensity, predator density, and food availability. We are creating a stochastic dynamic programming model of the DVM behavior of Daphnia to better understand changes in the amplitude of migration, and give estimates of zooplankton distributions in lakes.

Ice Phenology in the North Temperate LakesIn the north temperate lakes, year-to-year variation in ice-off date is 5x greater now than 60 years ago. Additionally, the average day of ice-off has shifted 5 days earlier over the past 100 years. What does this mean for lake environments and the creatures that live in them?
